 President's Message

On Tuesday one of our members remarked “One of our best speakers ever” after listening to our guest speaker talk to us about some of his experiences as an RAF fighter pilot during the cold war. Guy Slocum is also an entrepreneur and the president of our newest Rotary Club – Auckland Airport.

From becoming the youngest ever fighter pilot in the RAF to it’s youngest squadron leader he must have been one of the more expensive given the number of aircraft that either did not make it home at all or were in less than mint condition. From bailing out of a burning plane into the North Sea and being saved from freezing to death by his “enemy” Russian pilot, whose son he subsequently met and thanked years later, to a dog fight off the coast of Libya during the Gaddafi regime he has used most of “nine lives.” He could have spoken to us for a hour and no one would have objected.

Please support our upcoming events. Next week is committee night and I expect a good attendance and discussion by each committee of the trail changes being recommended by the board. Details are below and have also been emailed to members for consideration.

Our annual Christmas Party is the following week. Time to celebrate the upcoming holiday season and to enjoy fellowship with Rotarians, family and friends.

18th December will be our final meeting for the year and will be our AGM where we close off the previous rotary year and discuss the future of our club.

Proposed Trial of Club Changes
Club members will be aware of the recent survey of members canvasing ideas for changes to our meeting program. Our membership committee has collated those responses, which were recently circulated, and developed and made a submission to the board this week. The proposed changes are the result and will be put to the club members at the Annual General Meeting on 18th December 2018.

The proposal is for a trial of changes to our meetings program for the second half of the rotary year.

Please give this serious consideration. It is intended to address peoples concerns about both cost and time and to make our club more attractive to potential members.

RC Highbrook Annual Fun Run Walk
I am reaching out to you and your clubs for assistance if I may.

We are currently organising our annual fun run walk for February 2019, as per the attached flyer.  “Helping Youth Prosper” is the theme.

Can you join us as a runner?
Can you help us as a volunteer?  We need many people beyond our own members to help us set up and run the event.

There are many tasks from set up crew, pack down crew, registration team, traffic wardens, course marshal etc.

Please circulate the flyer and ask your members if they can help us.  If anyone can, they can contact me.

With many thanks.

Rotary International Convention
Attendance at a Rotary International Convention is an inspiring and uplifting experience. A number of club members attended the convention in Salt Lake City and came back buzzing.

The dates are 1st – 5th June and the location is Hamburg, Germany.

If you are planning travel at that time this is a great option to include in your trip.
