 President's Message

Gavin

Good Evening Members, Friends of Rotary, Past Members, Wives and Partners that read the Keyway.

Charter Night! I believe it was one of our best. Everyone was relaxed and the venue worked well with our numbers. The only unforeseen thing was not being able to have our Charter Night on the original date near to to our actual birthday. Never mind, we made up for it.

Thank you to my MC. Madeline East for running the night. You did a great Job. My thanks also to Jim Duckworth for the Cake. It would not be the same without a cake. And a big thank you to the David Teape and the Social Committee for working with Madeline to bring the program together.

I would also like to thank our District Governor, Craig Horrocks for his time with us. It was a pity that his wife Nickola could not be with us because of ill health.

It was great to see Bob and Hazel Jollands, Clive and Margaret Derbyshire, Gary and Sue Willcocks with us and it was wonderful to catch up with them all once again.

The 25 years service ceremony part of the evening went well. I believed that the club should take time to recognize those who have been in the club for some time. I thank the team that helped me get it over the line. I believe that this concept will give members something to want to achieve in the future.

I thank those who have helped on Blood Bank in Howick this week. Thanks to Helen Donoghue for organizing our contribution to this worthwhile event.

Also a thanks to Malcolm Pascoe and his team packing food boxes for the Salvation Army. Thank you all for participating in the communities.

On Tuesday the 10th November 2020 in addition to the Brian Hanlon Speech Awards we will have a short SGM to ratify the replacement President Elect. As advised previously Harjit Singh resigned from this position.

Club Birthday - Charter Night
Birthday Celebration!
Last night, members and guests enjoyed a fun filled social occasion as we met to celebrate Howick Rotary's 59th birthday. District Governor Craig Horrocks was in attendance to present special Service Awards to members who had given 25 or more years of service to the community. Jim Duckworth, our longest serving member, received extra recognition for being in his 50th year of service to the club and to the community. Jim, a baker in his past life, provided the birthday cake which was cut and enjoyed by all. We welcomed Steve Lines into the club as our newest member. After the recent hard work for our very successful Bookarama fundraising project it was great to be able to relax and enjoy ourselves with partners and friends in a very hospitable venue.

More on the Chartering of the Club
Charter Members of The Rotary Club of Howick
So, who were those far-sighted individuals who founded this organisation that has served Howick since 1961? Many of our current long serving members, who were rightly acknowledged for their great service this week, will have known some of these men. Bill Percival (pictured 4th from the right in the back row) was a member until his death in October 2012. A warm personality and a passionate photographer.
Back row – Jim Howells, John McIsaac, Bill Lambert, Keith Hallaway, Bill Percival, Rob Thorburn, Jack Hobbs, Lance Frost
Middle row – Sid Tucker, Wilf Brayshaw, George Allen, Eric Norman, Padre Holmes, Frank Easdale, Syd Beresford, John Taylor, Alan Auld
Front row – Don Wilson (Sgt. At Arms), Dick Marshall (Secretary), Tony Morcom-Green (Director), Hugo Johnston (District Governor’s Special Representative), Chas Blackwood (President), Bob Williamson (Vice-President), Tom Brydon (Director), Fe Fisher (Treasurer), Les Berridge (Song Leader)
Absent – Jack McNaughton (Director)
There is much more to learn or remember about these men and their successors in “Giving Back” a history of the Rotary Club of Howick Inc. 1961 – 2011. Dig out your copy or borrow one.

 Bookarama

Well Bookarama is over for another year !!
What an enormously successful event it was.  A perfect venue-fine weather-mountains of books etc-huge crowds on the sale days and great support from club members, partners and friends. The support from the community seems to gather each year and this year enabled us to achieve a record $$ return. We have already had offers of help for next years Bookarama from the community. 20 years of running the event in Howick has made it into something residents look forward to every year.
Your Bookarama committee wishes to thank all those who helped over the last few months. Planning for 2021 will start early next year so if you would like to join the committee please speak to one of us-we need as many co ordinators as possible.
We had a delightful call from a customer called Jenny to both thank the club for running the event as well as offering someone a copy of a Merrian Webster crossword dictionary. Apparently she spoke to a nice gentleman at Bookarama on Friday 16th October who was looking for a copy. She did not recall his name but knew he was a Howick Rotarian and thought he wore glasses. Is this person you?? If so call Jenny on 579 5466
Many thanks from your Bookarama committee
