 President's Message

Gavin
Good Evening Members, Friends of Rotary, Past Members, Wives and Partners that read the Keyway.

Life under Covid-19 is hard and I take this time to thank all my Rotary friends for staying safe and look forward to better times, fellowship and meeting and greeting.

Well done to those who joined me on Tuesday night on Zoom. Technology is a great thing for all of us to keep in touch where ever we are in the world. I would like to thank Dave Wylie for connecting us all up so we could listen to our two guest speakers from the Labour Party, Naisi Chan and Nerissa Henry? It was great to hear from two young up and coming local candidates with so much knowledge and inspiration. Thank you for your time and I wish you both well.

Also thank you to Eliza Ning from Rotary Club of Hong Kong Harbour, a guest on- line for your contribution to our meeting.

To Steve Lines and other guests who also participated (22 members on- line), thank you for your time. It is hard to communicate in a different environment you all did well.

I would also like to say sorry for putting off our Charter Night until the 27th October. As you all are aware, Covid-19 has no friends. If by the 13th October there has been no change, Charter Night for this year will be cancelled.

Thanks to Ian Fox for running Tuesday night and the program, John Richardson for the “Have a Go” raffle draw, and Rob Mouncey for our Keyway. Thank you, team.

Bookarama is going well and thank you to Geoff Thompson and his team for all the work that is going on picking up and sorting books. Please remember many hands make light work.

David Owen and Howick College have only one contestant for Science fair this year. A sign of the times.

I wish all my Rotary Friends and their families all the best. Please stay safe where ever you are.

Our next meeting is scheduled for the 22nd September and will be, unless levels change, a Zoom meeting, Birthday drink and a meeting on communication, i.e. Club runner, Keyway, Club Information and Technology etc.

Election 2020 Lead Up - Labour
It was the turn of Labour candidates Nerissa Henry (Pakuranga) and Naisi Chen (Botany) to present the parties key policies to the members of the club on Tuesday night. As Covid lock down conditions prevented a meeting at the Howick Club venue a Zoom meeting was set up which 22 members attended including Eliza Ning from the Hong Kong Harbour Club doing a remote make up.

 Bookarama 2020

The flood of books,CD’s,,DVD’s and LP’s has started. We now need your help!!
Sorting at our depot in Uxbridge Rd -beneath Ray White Ltd has started and continues each Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday during September. Each morning 9.30am to 12 noon. To avoid too many helpers turning up on the same day could you please let John, Colin or Geoff know your plans so that a roster can be prepared.

As always, many hands make light work. It is important we share the workload and not leave it up to just a few.

Many thanks
Geoff Thompson

Facebook

Facebook is a simple way to help promote Bookarama. Whether you are a Facebook user or not it is easy to get the message out there. If you are a FB user you can log on as usual, find the Howick Rotary FB page and ‘like’ this. You should then continue to get updates. If you do not ‘do’ FB then go to the club webpage, (howickrotary.org.nz) click on the FB icon and that will take you there.

It is important to remember the messages are not just for you but are for those who are not a part of our club. If you are able to do so it is important to hit the ‘share’ button. That sends the post to all those on your FB list.

As I said on the zoom meeting, ‘sharing’ is like Covid. You spread it to all your friends and they in turn can spread it to their friends. It multiplies very quickly.  I can see over the past 28 days 7937 people have seen our club posts. Of those 555 have interacted in some way, possibly by leaving a comment, ‘liking’ the post, or even more importantly sharing it to others.

Here is a simple, no cost way for us to advertise Bookarama. Can you help?
