 President's Message

Gavin

Good Evening Members, Friends of Rotary, Past Members, Wives and Partners that read the Keyway.

Thank you to all our members for being there on Tuesday night for what I would have to say was a great evening in Rotary.

To start the evening we had the induction of another new member, a lovely lady, Glenice Yeoman. Welcome to the Rotary Club of Howick. I know you will be a very valuable member of the club. Membership Director Bill Charokow introduced Glenice and Past President Rob Mouncey welcomed Glenice to Rotary's international organization on behalf of 2020/21 President Holger Knaack.

To compliment the induction of Glenice we then had new member Bhupen Narsey present his life. From a family beginning in India to being brought up and educated in Fiji. Bhupen completed his university study to become one of the top engineers in Air Fiji, Air Canada and Air New Zealand? Well done Bhupen we are proud to have you in the Rotary Club of Howick.

Amongst our dinner group were two guests Tim Gelston and Mark Innes and we look forward to seeing more of them and and hearing their life story’s in the future. No doubt they will be participating in club activities in the days ahead.

Another big occasion on the night was for long standing member for 41 years Alan Peterson. Alan had felt that it was time for him to resign from active membership due to age and health issues. Whilst the Board accepted Alans resignation with sadness and regret it wanted to recognize his many years of service to the club by presenting him with an Honorary Membership and his 25 year Service Certificate (introduced this year) which he had missed out in before. We all hope that Alan will continue to join us when he is able.

At this time of the year as we approach changeover I would like to thank my Board members for their input over the year. The efforts of the Board and the membership has placed the club in a good place for the future.

Please all stay safe and well.

New Member Induction

Bill Charkow introduced new member Glenice Yeoman to the club and President Gavin Green then completed the induction ceremony and presented Glenice with her membership pack and name badge. The ceremony was rounded off by Rob Mouncey who welcomed new member Glenice to the Rotary International organization on behalf of 2020/21 President Holger Knaack.

Life originated for Glenice in Whakatane. She came from a farming background and more recently worked successfully as an Events Manager for Villa Maria Wines.

She has four adult children and currently operates “attitude b n b” as Managing Director. Interestingly she has designed the “b n b” to suit the needs of families with disabilities to ensure they maximize the enjoyment of their stay.

It is evident that Glenice likes working in a team environment as she has already been a keen participant in the clubs’ projects. It is also nice that Glenice’s induction takes us another step along the journey of gender balance. Glenice will be joining the Community Committee.

Honorary Membership Presentation

President Gavin presented Alan Peterson with his Honorary Membership and his 25 year plus Service Certificates at the clubs dinner meeting on Tuesday. Alan had informed the Board that he wished to resign because of age and health issues and whilst the Board reluctantly accepted his resignation it was decided to recognize Alan's 41 wonderful years of service to club (in addition to 5 years service in Port Moresby) by awarding him an Honorary Membership. In making the presentation President Gavin expressed his hope that Alan would come along to club meetings and events whenever he was able. He and son Giles would be very welcome

Bookarama 2021

The year is rolling along fast following our very successful FUN RUN and participation in the recent BRIT & EURO CAR SHOW. Our next major event is of course BOOKARAMA.

As you all know this is the club’s major fundraiser and it needs maximum participation from as many members, partners and friends as possible for it to be the success it has been in years gone by. Last year was our best year ever thanks to fantastic support from everyone.

We have already collected a reasonable quantity of books at our depot in Uxbridge Rd and most of those have been sorted. Book sorting will be re commenced on an as need basis and dates will be advertised in the Keyway.

This years event will again be held at Sommerville Intermediate School and the dates are as follows:
Big Shift Wednesday 6th October   Early Bird night Tuesday 12th October  Sales days 13th-17th October

Many Thanks
Geoff Thompson - Convenor
