Tuesday night was Charter Night our annual celebration of Howick Rotary club receiving its charter. The actual date was 26th September 1961 and our club was sponsored by Newmarket Rotary and the club began with a very respectable 26 members.
Our birthday party started on a sad note with news of the passing of Past President Phil Beresford (1976-77). After a moment's silence out of respect for Phil the party began.
We were delighted to have 22 guests for the evening including our local MP Simeon Brown who took the trouble to get leave from Parliament to fly up for the evening and returned on the ”redeye” the next morning. Also present were members of the local board including the Chairman David Collings, Sharon Stewart and newly elected Paul Young. Grace Cussell from RYLA was a welcome visitor but unfortunately Sean Kerr was unable to get away from his next rocket preparation. Our ADG and a couple of neighbouring club presidents joined us for the event. A lot of past members and friends of the club also helped to make it a special occasion.
Hazel Hanlon and David Teape did the honours with our birthday cake. The Floral Mafia lived up to their usual standard with the flowers and lots of balloons provided a festive air. The whole event was a credit to the social committee lead by David Fels and as usual John and Heather Savory are also owed a big thank you from us all. As I mentioned in closing the evening we had no specific entertainment but we didn’t need it, the room was alive with the buzz of conversation and laughter.
One of the highlights of Charter Night was being able to present Shirley Curtis with a PHF for her services to the community through her involvement with The Howick fun Run and Walk. It is people like Shirley who help to make our community special and it is important that we acknowledge their service.
