 President's Message

Madeleine East

It was good to be back and catch up with you all at our Tuesday meeting, and a very warm welcome back to Glen Donaldson!!

The Police Award night is always a special night for us, and what a special night it was with 9 members of the Police there to celebrate Nicola Gibson on being the recipient of the 2022 Award.

Inspector Scott Gemmel, Area Commander, introduced by David Owen, outlined the selection process for the Award. It is very evident that Nicola (Nicky) is highly respected by her work colleagues and the Senior Leadership Team. Her police career has been centred around the local area, her husband is also in the Police Force and their two children go to local schools. She is passionate about her community and her work. It was such a pleasure to meet Nicky and an honour to present her with the Police Award.

Since returning from a really interesting trip to Australia, travelling with Colin and Meryl Monk to Brisbane, then on to Darwin, slowly making our way to Broome then home via Perth! We visited some great places on the way and I personally learned a great deal about the sheer enormity of Australia, the harshness of the climate and came to understand a little better the cultural heritage that the aboriginal people share with locals and visitors alike. I have to say it was such a pleasure to wake up every day to clear blue skies and sunshine, even though at times it was little on the warm side !!

My thanks to Malcolm for holding the fort while I was away enjoying myself!

I had the pleasure on Sunday 14th August to take part in the official opening of the Heritage Recipe Bread Oven at the HHV. Thanks to Jim Duckworth for his vision and generosity, and to the team of volunteers who worked to get it built and in place. A real asset to the Village.

Malcolm has been looking after the Regionalisation debate, I do apologise but somehow, we missed the timeline but it has been briefly raised at a board meeting and Malcolm has sent out documentation to Directors along with information that Rob has included in this keyway. Please read the information we will be asked to vote whether we support it or not on Charter night, so as President I can register our club’s vote.

Police Awards

Nicola Gibson receiving the Annual Howick Rotary Police Award for 2022. President Madeleine East
presented the Award which was announced by Scott Gemmell District Commander Counties Manukau
East. The Annual Police Award is organized by Rotarian David Owen.

The Annual Police Award was held at the Club’s last dinner meeting. This year it was the task of new District Commander for Counties Manukau – East Scott Gemmell to announce the winner of the 2022 Rotary Club of Howick Police Award to Nicola (Nicky) Gibson. On making the announcement Scott described the process by which the Leadership Team had put forward candidates and then jointly assessed the person who had made what Scott described as an amazing contribution to the force and the community. “Nicky has dedicated her career and life to policing. It is through her example of dedication and effort that police can help the community feel safe” he said.

The Award was presented to Nicky by President Madeleine East who previously had welcomed the Leadership Team of 8 officers to the club’s dinner meeting. The Annual Award is organized by Convenor David Owen himself a police officer in the UK for many years.

  Regionalization - Zone 8

Rotary International is considering a project to address membership, public image, communication, leadership, and fundraising challenges to help define a more sustainable future for Rotary. Our region, or Zone 8, which includes Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands, has been selected as one of two potential regions from across the globe to pilot a regional approach to governance.

The first priority is to ensure that Rotary members are consulted throughout this process. In fact, the project cannot proceed without the support of members and clubs.

A local Regionalization team made up of Rotarians from our zone has identified five key project objectives: - Support clubs to engage members, volunteers, and communities - Create new attractive leadership roles and development opportunities - Build a stronger unified Rotary brand - Encourage partnerships - Improve efficiencies and reduce duplication.

Howick Rotary has an opportunity to consider the pilot programme and vote on whether we as a club support the pilot programme. Our majority vote will then be carried by President Madelaine into the ballot of all clubs in Zone 8.

In order to consider the matter further please refer to page 44 of the August edition of Rotary Down Under or better still go to the special web site www.creatingtomorrowrotary.org (tap link) where you will find Fact Sheets on the project and voting, FAQ’s, Resources as well as the ability to contribute your individual input to the project.
