Another really good turnout at our Zoom meeting. Thank you all for linking in.
Our guest for the evening was DG Steve Chaney, joined by his wife Edith, Alan Smith and Vinod Sareen. We have been working with DG Steve for a wee while now to find a time for him to visit us so it was good to finally have the opportunity for him to speak to our club.
DG Steve and his wife Edith shared a presentation which effectively outlined Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta’s goals and aspirations for his year, goals that emphasise a vison that encompasses individual clubs, but reflect international trends and needs.
Key areas addressed within the presentation were:
Growing Membership
Starting new clubs, using different models
Empowering Girls
Increase our impact.
A further key message included Rotary’s statement on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, all embraced within the goals above.
A presentation by Edith Chaney on Leaders Learning and Development noted that learning opportunities would be offered both online and face to face.
A timely reminder from DG Steve about District 9920 Matariki Conference on 24th and 25th June 2022 at Te Papa rounded off the presentation.

Geoff Thompson updated us on Bookarama, and while we have had to put off our 2021 event, planning is in place to hold a mini Bookarama in March 2022.The committee is awaiting confirmation for the use of the RSA. Our usual full scale Bookarama will be on again in October 2022.Geoff and his team will keep us posted, we will need all the help we can get for both of these events, but with the cancellation of The Fun Run/Walk there will not be so much pressure on us.

Mike Abercrombie is following up on our behalf to use the Masonic Lodge for our December meeting. As soon as I have a date, I will let you know but we are looking for it to be either Monday 13th December or Tuesday 14th December. It will be a simple get together, no meal provided, but if you wish to bring your own nibbles please do so along with your own beverage and glassware. There will however be Christmas Cake!! Jim Duckworth is taking very good care of the cake for us and I am given to understand it is well laced with Brandy!! It will be a very simple programme 5.30 – 6.30pm, including Raffles plus the BIG Have a Go draw, and a long-awaited Sergeants Session. I am sure Sergeant Bill will have many interesting fines so be prepared to be generous!!!
Our position on Covid Vaccinations.
At our last board meeting the board agreed to the following statement being included in our Administration Folder.
“In the interests of members health and safety, the Board of the Rotary Club of Howick has the expectation that all members and guests will be fully vaccinated”
This statement is supported by the following procedures attached to the minutes of the November meeting.
- The Rotary Club of Howick will follow all Health and safety Policies and Procedures, including those relating to Covid 19 vaccination status, of any venue we use.
- All members of the RCoH are expected to be fully vaccinated and will provide assurance of this and the Secretary will maintain an up-to-date record.
- Guests, including partners and speakers, will be required to confirm their vaccination status and may be declined admission to our meeting or function.
- Non vaccinated guests (or members) will be expected to adhere to the Government of the day mandate including, but not restricted to, wearing a mask and social distancing, but may be still declined entry to any meeting or function.
I am looking forward to seeing you all in person, hopefully on 13th or 14th December, watch out for an update on this.
