We had a very well attended meeting on the 21st of November.
It was our privilege to again host the “Brian Hanlon Memorial speech awards”
Initially this involved a group of Rotarians going to Howick College to select three finalists from a group of eleven entrants from Year 9 and 10 students.
The calibre of the students put forward was so high that we choose four finalists.
These four finalists attended our meeting to once again present their speeches to our club members.
We had many quests on the night as each student bought along family members. Howick College Teachers, Anne Botha and Leon ?? coordinated the students for the contest. Barry Nicholls was our coordinator with the college.
We were fortunate to have Michelle Innes (Brian Hanlon’s daughter) and her husband Robbie present, to present the awards.
Casey Ferguson went first with a speech about universal income.
Second was Bianca Smith who had chosen ignorance as her subject.
Third was Rylee Barrett with her subject centred around the word Fuck.
Forth was Chanelle Good with a speech around child labour.
As in all contests there can be only on winner
Rylee Barrett was the overall winner with a F...ing great presentation.
As you can imagine the subject drew gasps from the audience. Rylee was so confident and masterful as she went through the pros and cons of the use of the “F” word in today’s environment, she was able to explain the worlds ever changing attitudes.
Rylee was presented with the Brian Hanlon trophy by Michelle and also a Paper Plus voucher
1st Runner up was Chanelle Good. Once again was presented with a Paper Plus voucher by Michelle.
2nd Runner up equal was Bianca Smith and Casey Ferguson who were both presented with a Paper Plus voucher by Michelle.
Our sincere congratulations to all the contestants and our thanks to all those that contributed to a successful Contest.
We also had another occasion to be involved with Howick College. Howick Rotary was invited to the year eleven Honours Award Ceremony on 26th October. Mike Abercrombie and I presented the
Rotary Club Commitment to the Environment Award.
This year the award was presented to Yoshini Ananthgrangan (see below). This is the first time a year eleven student has won this award.
Rotary business then took place.
Sergeant Steve Lines once again kept us humoured with his fines against members.
