 President's Message

Gavin

Good Evening Members, Friends of Rotary, Past Members, Wives and Partners that read the Keyway.

Please all stay safe and well.

What a great night at Rotary, Tuesday night was with guests Meryl Monk, Bhupen Narsay (prospective new member), our guest speaker Adele White and Fred Holland back from heart surgery.

Adele White spoke on her work as Chair of the Howick Board giving a very enlightening speech covering finding funding for projects in our community, running a team of community board members with different backgrounds and outlooks as well as trying to keep the average person in the street happy.

She acknowledged the contribution that the Rotary Club of Howick makes in the community and issued a challenge for the club to try and engage with the new diverse migrants in the area.

Thankyou to Helen Donoghue and her team with Blood Bank. Thank you Geoff Thompson and his team with Brit Euro Car Show and John Osborne and the team for Fun Run and Walk.

We need help at all our projects and as I have said before many hands make light work. So get involved and enjoy the social interaction that follows the work.

Harlequin Musical Theatre is booked for the 17th March. The show and the theme is Grease so you can make your self up with slick hair etc. Email or text  John Savory, or myself with ticket numbers.

I am looking forward to seeing you all on the 9th March when we will be inducting our next new member. Guests are welcome.

We send you our best wishes and if there is anything we can help you with please ring me.

Howick Local Board Chair Presentation

Howick Local Board Chairperson Adele White was the guest speaker at the club’s dinner meeting.

She took the opportunity to present what she called “Local Board 101” which was an interesting and comprehensive overview of the role of the Local Board within the local government of the “Auckland Super City”.

Howick Coastguard Annual BBQ Invitation

Howick Coastguard have invited members and partners to the Annual BBQ Event to be held next Tuesday evening. Whist they are sorry about the late notice this is a fun event that should not be missed.

In addition to the Social get together and BBQ there will be an opportunity to go out on the rescue vessel.

Whilst the invite indicated a start time of 7pm to be confirmed if you get down to the club rooms earlier I am sure we will be able to occupy ourselves.

If you would like to attend please send an email to Chris Paul tikaba13@gmail.com with a copy to Secretary Garry donoz@xtra.co.nz to coordinate numbers.

Howick Fun Walk and Run

Brit and Euro Car Show

Brit & Euro Car Show 7th March Lloyd Elsmore Park
This hugely successful event is about to be held once again in our area. The organisers have received massive interest from car clubs from all over NZ and expect in excess of 1250 cars will be displayed on the day. An event of this scale takes a huge amount of organising and requires the help of as many volunteers as possible.

They expect a large turnout of visitors and the event presents itself as a golden opportunity for us as Rotarians to show the public that Rotary is a dynamic community supporting organisation.

The Community committee is again setting up a BBQ and volunteers are needed to help with this between 9am and 4pm.We also need help with car parking 7.00am to 10.00am and 3.00pm to 4. 00pm.The Howick Historical Village needs volunteers to help them with gold coin donations at the main entry points (refer email from Marin Burgess) An opportunity here to hand out our “Howick Rotary Making Our Community a Better Place” flyers

This event is an incredible opportunity for members of our club to give up a little of their time and show the community that Rotary is a great organisation.

Please give serious thought on how you can help on the day. We need 6-8 volunteers to help with the BBQ .6-8 with car parking and 6-8 with the gold coin collections and flyer distribution. A roster will be prepared for distribution at the next meeting on the 23rd February-so please let either Malcolm or Geoff know how you can help

Many thanks
Malcolm and Geoff

Historical Village Request for Help.

Dear Society Members – In welcoming you all to 2021 with a wish this year will prove to be happy, healthy and safe for all I also remind you just how precarious our situation at the Historical Village was in 2020.  Our 40th Anniversary year was not expected to roll out the way it did.

But we made it and are very grateful to all our members who stood by us during the long lock down and as we start to move into an uncertain ‘new normal’.  The Historical Village is in fine shape and well worth a visit.  There are a series of events coming up over summer so watch out for the adverts.

I am now asking for further assistance.  The Classic Car Show has always supported the Village in return for use of our premises throughout the year and as such we are recipients of any funds that can be raised at the car show.

We need help on the day to maximise this effort on our behalf.
The date is Sunday 7th March and we have a couple of roles:
Between 9.30 – 11.30 or 11.30 – 1.30pm at either of the two main entry points to the Lloyd Elsmore Park with collection buckets for gold coin donations.

OR

Assisting at the Horse Bus with the dress up photos (Hats and shawls only) – The gazebo will be up and there’ll be seating and water however this is an active role – The Horse Bus is the oldest vehicle in the show so attracts a lot of attention and people enjoy climbing on for a photo op – a gold coin will be the price for this.  The shifts are 9.30 – 11.30 and 11.30 – 1.30.

ID will be provided for members for both roles and Board members will also be helping out.

For either of these roles please email me on hhvpresident@historicalvillage.org.nz  or phone me on 022 1707348.  We will need your response by 23 February please.
With kind regards,

Rotary Book Launch

As you are aware this is our centenary year.

If members wish to buy this Rotary History Book at the discounted $39.95 price make contact with your secretary before March 1st.

This year marks 100 years of Rotary clubs across New Zealand and 100 years of service to the community.  Bill Boyd (past International) is patron of the project and others, and gave a comprehensive background at the book launch this week.

Mana Tangata (the title)  is a well written and richly illustrated history book, tracing the development of clubs across the country, the people and personalities that led the way, and the service that clubs engaged in with their communities. Every Rotarian will benefit from reading this book and understanding our history.  It lists when every club was established in New Zealand over the last 100 years and the 85 years Rotary clubs have been established in the Pacific.  It outlines our stories in our local communities, at a national level and internationally.

Our 100 -year anniversary provides the opportunity to take stock.  Mana Tangata includes an Epilogue on Looking Forward that discusses the challenges as we build Rotary clubs that can serve into the future.

Rotary Clubs can purchase copies of the book at a “Club” price, on the basis of a carton of 12 books.  A substantial discount is offered – at $39.95 per copy in a box of 12, delivered, compared to $69.95 RRP in bookstores.  Clubs can on-sell copies to members at a margin for Club funds.  The carton of books will be delivered in May 2021, and freight free.  Orders and payment must be received by 28 February 2021 to be eligible for this price.  A carton of 12 books is $479.52 (incl GST).

From 1 March 2021, the price per carton of 12 will increase to $660 ($55.00 per copy), with additional freight of $20 per carton.
