 President's Message

Gavin

Good Evening Members, Friends of Rotary, Past Members, Wives and Partners that read the Keyway.

Tuesday night started on an unfortunate note with a disagreement between two long standing and major contributing members being aired. The matter which had  been referred to the Board recently was under consideration and it is disappointing that due process has not been allowed to help resolve the issue. As one of our newest members asked was it “fair to all concerned”?  The answer is an obvious No.

The meeting then returned to normal with our Speakers for the night Steve Lines and Bill Charkow giving us humour and food for thought.

First Steve Lines gave us his introductory speech. An enlightened presentation on his life, from being born and bought up in England, meeting and marrying his lovely wife Sarah. Moving to New Zealand in late 1990. Steve was asked if he would like a job teaching at Rosehill College, hence only going back to England for holidays. Steve and Sarah have 2 children Rebecca and Thomas and 3 Grand Children Iris, Imogen and Isaac.  Steve’s teaching career was completed leaving Somerville Intermediate School in 2017 to retire and working on his hobbies golf, fishing, Little Red MG (Rupert), Menzshed, sailing, Rotary and all the other good things you do when you retire. During his speech and following his own struggles he gave us an interesting way to remember how to spell Ngaruawahia is. (Nine girls are running under a wharf and here I am). Thank you Steve for a well enlightening  and entertaining speech.

Bill Charkow spoke on membership and assisted with some project ideas to help others and keep Rotary in front of the public. They follow on from our speakers two weeks ago one being assisting the food banks with “give a can’, we could give a little each week and the other is “give a blanket”. No doubt Malcolm and his team will be following up with All Saints and Stand to get some structure and plan together. We should all think about how we can help others.

Please get in behind of coming events. Howick Fun Run and Walk and the Brit Euro Car Show. Many hands make light work.

Alan Peterson is finding moving around difficult, so if any of you have time to call in or ring him, he would be happy to hear from you. I also talked to Fred Holland who is recovering from his heart operation. He said the mornings are better than the afternoon and evenings.
We send you our wishes and if there is anything, we can help you with please ring me.

Brit and Euro Car Show

Brit & Euro Car Show 7th March Lloyd Elsmore Park
This hugely successful event is about to be held once again in our area. The organisers have received massive interest from car clubs from all over NZ and expect in excess of 1250 cars will be displayed on the day. An event of this scale takes a huge amount of organising and requires the help of as many volunteers as possible.

They expect a large turnout of visitors and the event presents itself as a golden opportunity for us as Rotarians to show the public that Rotary is a dynamic community supporting organisation.

The Community committee is again setting up a BBQ and volunteers are needed to help with this between 9am and 4pm.We also need help with car parking 7.00am to 10.00am and 3.00pm to 4. 00pm.The Howick Historical Village needs volunteers to help them with gold coin donations at the main entry points (refer email from Marin Burgess) An opportunity here to hand out our “Howick Rotary Making Our Community a Better Place” flyers

This event is an incredible opportunity for members of our club to give up a little of their time and show the community that Rotary is a great organisation.

Please give serious thought on how you can help on the day. We need 6-8 volunteers to help with the BBQ .6-8 with car parking and 6-8 with the gold coin collections and flyer distribution. A roster will be prepared for distribution at the next meeting on the 23rd February-so please let either Malcolm or Geoff know how you can help

Many thanks
Malcolm and Geoff

Historical Village Request for Help.

Dear Society Members – In welcoming you all to 2021 with a wish this year will prove to be happy, healthy and safe for all I also remind you just how precarious our situation at the Historical Village was in 2020.  Our 40th Anniversary year was not expected to roll out the way it did.

But we made it and are very grateful to all our members who stood by us during the long lock down and as we start to move into an uncertain ‘new normal’.  The Historical Village is in fine shape and well worth a visit.  There are a series of events coming up over summer so watch out for the adverts.

I am now asking for further assistance.  The Classic Car Show has always supported the Village in return for use of our premises throughout the year and as such we are recipients of any funds that can be raised at the car show.

We need help on the day to maximise this effort on our behalf.
The date is Sunday 7th March and we have a couple of roles:
Between 9.30 – 11.30 or 11.30 – 1.30pm at either of the two main entry points to the Lloyd Elsmore Park with collection buckets for gold coin donations.

OR

Assisting at the Horse Bus with the dress up photos (Hats and shawls only) – The gazebo will be up and there’ll be seating and water however this is an active role – The Horse Bus is the oldest vehicle in the show so attracts a lot of attention and people enjoy climbing on for a photo op – a gold coin will be the price for this.  The shifts are 9.30 – 11.30 and 11.30 – 1.30.

ID will be provided for members for both roles and Board members will also be helping out.

For either of these roles please email me on hhvpresident@historicalvillage.org.nz  or phone me on 022 1707348.  We will need your response by 23 February please.
With kind regards,

Marin Burgess

Rotary Dine Out

Seen here are 12 smiling happy Rotarians and partners enjoying the tropical island like surroundings at Pepperjacks Restaurant Pine Harbour last Sunday for lunch.
As always it was a great atmosphere and the day was gloriously sunny in which to have a most enjoyable outing together.
There were plenty of brilliant suggestions offered for the next one which will be held in approximately a month’s time.
David Teape will advise you of this in due course.

New Member Presentation

New member Steve Lines presented a synopsis of his life to the club at our last meeting.

Born in Walsall in the Black Country of England in 1953 Steve told us how he grew up in a “world of makers “as many of his relations worked in the Austin car factory in Birmingham or associated industries. His father was a fitter and turner and his mum looked after the family home and Steve and his younger brother Andrew. While at school at the early age of 16 he and his Dad restored a “clapped out “1961 Reliant using his part time job money.
He joined the Royal Engineers cadet force and loved the structure and discipline of the army. He went on to train as a teacher at Shoreditch College London majoring in Science and Technology which led him onto a number teaching roles in English and New Zealand schools. His move to the area was as Head of Technology at Howick College and following that to avoid “drowning in paperwork” became the Graphics Teacher at Somerville Intermediate. It was here that he made the acquaintance of President Gavin.

Whilst at High Wycombe he met and married Sarah and they have 2 children Rebecca and Tom both of whom are married. Steve and Sarah have 3 grandchildren in Rebecca’s family and he says Tom is still practising! They love travelling and Steve is also an avid sailor. Since retiring from teaching in 2017 he enjoys “giving back” to the community and is a Board member of the Howick Menzshed organization. He is looking forward to continuing to serve the community through his Rotary membership.

A big welcome to Steve and Sarah!

Rotary Book Launch

As you are aware this is our centenary year.

If members wish to buy this Rotary History Book at the discounted $39.95 price make contact with your secretary before March 1st.

This year marks 100 years of Rotary clubs across New Zealand and 100 years of service to the community.  Bill Boyd (past International) is patron of the project and others, and gave a comprehensive background at the book launch this week.

Mana Tangata (the title)  is a well written and richly illustrated history book, tracing the development of clubs across the country, the people and personalities that led the way, and the service that clubs engaged in with their communities. Every Rotarian will benefit from reading this book and understanding our history.  It lists when every club was established in New Zealand over the last 100 years and the 85 years Rotary clubs have been established in the Pacific.  It outlines our stories in our local communities, at a national level and internationally.

Our 100 -year anniversary provides the opportunity to take stock.  Mana Tangata includes an Epilogue on Looking Forward that discusses the challenges as we build Rotary clubs that can serve into the future.

Rotary Clubs can purchase copies of the book at a “Club” price, on the basis of a carton of 12 books.  A substantial discount is offered – at $39.95 per copy in a box of 12, delivered, compared to $69.95 RRP in bookstores.  Clubs can on-sell copies to members at a margin for Club funds.  The carton of books will be delivered in May 2021, and freight free.  Orders and payment must be received by 28 February 2021 to be eligible for this price.  A carton of 12 books is $479.52 (incl GST).

From 1 March 2021, the price per carton of 12 will increase to $660 ($55.00 per copy), with additional freight of $20 per carton.
