 President's Message

Tuesday night was one of those Rotary meetings that was memorable for a number of reasons. Our evening featured the Brian Hanlon Speech Awards and we were amazed at the eloquence and passion of our 4 contestants who used different subjects as diverse as the refugee crisis, sexism, body image and drunk driving in the context of Rotary’s 4 way test. If we needed an affirmation of why our relationship with Howick College is so important to both organisations they provided it. Listening to them we know the future is in good hands.

Our winner, Brian Hanlon Speech Contest, Ridihi Singh

On next Monday evening I have the privilege of representing Howick Rotary Club at the college’s Senior Honours Ceremony. No doubt I will get to see more of our future leaders. The judges were from Toastmasters and we are very grateful for their assistance.

There were a total of 55 people including the contestants and their families, teachers from Howick College, three from Toastmasters, wives and friends or Rotary plus five potential members checking us out. Everyone was very positive after a terrific night and we will be meeting with them shortly to clarify what we do and what is involved in becoming a member of Howick Rotary Club.

Speaking of leaders Heather and John Savory will be on their way to a well deserved break when this is published in Egypt and Europe returning before Christmas. Hopefully we will receive regular photos and highlights of their holiday.

Included below there are a number of newsletter and rotary requests to keep you up to date with what is happening in the Rotary world. Please have a read and consider what you might do to help. Of particular importance is Rotary Foundation and giving to support it’s mission. Some of us are going to the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” on Friday night as part of a nationwide fundraiser. It will be an enjoyable night for a great cause.

Jeannette and I have committed ourselves to attending the district conference in Napier between 10-12 May next year. We have enjoyed the past two conferences and been challenged and inspired by the people we have met. How about joining us. Let me know over the next couple of weeks and we can book accommodation. Napier and Hawkes Bay are a great place to visit. Lots of vineyards!

Tuesday is committee night. See you then.

Become a Paul Harris Society Member
November as we know is “Foundation” Month, so what better way to celebrate by becoming a Paul Harris Society member. For the 2018-2019 year, all that is needed is a commitment of $1000 USD, but don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be done in one payment. If you are like me, I do over 12 months with a regular credit card payment of $125 NZD & depending on the exchange rate come June might have to top up, but easier than all at once, so something for you to consider.
