One of the privileges of being Club President is being able to acknowledge those who serve our community. One way Howick Rotary does this is to make an award to the Police Officer nominated by our local Police Commander.
As she does every year Inspector Wendy Spiller addressed our club and spoke about what is happening and how our district, Counties Manukau, will be a beneficiary of the increased numbers of new officers that the government has authorised.
Inspector Wendy Spiller
No doubt we are all pleased to know that south and east Auckland will be the base for many of those who will graduate regularly during the year.
The recipient of this year’s award was Sergeant Michael Smitt who’s outstanding dedication and contribution to our community was outlined by Inspector Spiller. A well deserved award.
Many of our club members attended the funeral of Carole Saunders recently and discovered that one of her loves was “Riding for the Disabled” so we decided that all fines extracted from members for the evening would go to that worthy cause. Our acting sergeant Glen Donaldson squeezed us all on various pretexts and I was pleased to be able to make it up to $500 to be donated to Totara Park, Riding for the Disabled, where Carole spent a lot of her time teaching disabled children the joy of riding.
This coming Tuesday our guest speaker is Shefali Mehta who will be speaking to our club about Interplast. This is another of the amazing programs developed and supported by Rotary. It is a medical program and will make for a fascinating night. I hope to see lots of members and guests there.
Tuesday 19th will be followed by a combined meeting of the current and new boards.
Thought for the day
Coming together is the beginning,
Keeping together is progress,
Working together is success.
Henry Ford – perhaps he was talking about Rotary.
