The meeting on 24th October was very well attended and we were honoured to have the following dignitaries attend.
District Governor Vineeta, Assistant Governor David Bradshaw and also Kristen Hawke District Governor Nominee and District Secretary. 

DG Vineeta took the opportunity to share a presentation with us.  It highlights what Rotary is doing in Fiji and also that the Annual Rotary Conference is being held in Fiji early April 2024.

Vineeta also spoke of Rotary International and that President Gordon Mclnally has a theme “Create Hope in the World”.  There is an overwhelming need to restore wellness and that mental health is a major current challenge for many people and communities. 
There was an update on the Polio project and that worldwide we have reached the point of elimination at 99.8%
 
Our Guest Speaker for the night was Martin Butler and his technical support partner Al. Martin spoke to us about the secrets of North Head and he believes that there are some early 1918 Boeing Aircraft located within the tunnels of North Head.

These aircraft had belonged to the New Zealand Flying School and are the very first Boeing Aircraft ever made.  Almost a century later Martin goes in search of any remnants of these famous planes.

The journey takes them to North Head Devonport’s famous military landmark.  This had long been the subject of rumours and urban myths about sealed tunnels and hidden rooms. Could the planes be buried in one of these forgotten tunnels.

After research and investigations spanning twenty years,[ including a ground penetrating radar survey], Martin uncovered a trail of deception, confusion and cover-ups as he attempted to unravel the mystery of what lies beneath the surface of North Head.

There were numerous questions from the floor. Our thanks to Martin were given in the normal manner.

Rotary Business then took place.

District Governor's Visit
District Governor Vineeta Nand, Assistant Governor David Bradshaw and District Governor Nominee Kirsten Hawke with club members.
 
District 9920 Governor Vineeta Nand gave a presentation of the work and goals of Rotary throughout the district with particular emphasis on some of the wonderful projects being carried out in the Pacific Islands. She was accompanied by AG David Bradshaw and DG Nominee Kirsten Hawke. A good update on things Rotary. 
 
Guest Speaker - Martin Butler
Martin Butler Presenting "Secrets of North Head Part 2" at the Club's Dinner Meeting
 
Martin Butler was the guest speaker at the club’s last dinner meeting. This is the second occasion that Martin has presented to the club and provided an update on his investigation into the “secrets” of North Head. From earlier investigations based on historical documents and eye witness accounts Martin employed the services of Scan Tec Geophysical Consultants and using ground penetrating radar has confirmed the myriad of closed off tunnels and structures some of which may contain old ammunition.
 
Martin has written a book “Tunnel Vision” based on his 20 year investigation and his concern for the possible consequences of the old munitions exploding.

All in all another intriguing and possibly concerning presentation.

 World Alzheimer's Month Appeal

 
 
Most members know of family of friends who have been touched by this as yet incurable dreadful disease.
 
At the September meeting the Board decided to support the Appeal following a presentation by David Fels. The Sergeants fines for the month of September and October along with personal donations from members will be matched by the Community Trust and a grant made to the Dementia New Zealand.
