 President's Message

Gavin
Good Evening Members, Friends of Rotary, Past Members, Wives and Partners that read the Keyway.

Last Saturday Garry Donoghue, David Teape and I went to the District Change Over at the Remuera Golf Club 1730 till 1930hrs, a very good evening. Our District Governors Past and present ran a very good night telling us of the year passed and what we expect for the coming year. Because of Covid-19 there was no conference in the last Rotary year so all the District awards were handed out.

I think it is time that the Rotary Club of Howick should set as one of our goals to go for a district trophy. After District Change Over the three of us retired to the Speights Ale House in Stone fields to enjoy a nice wine and a meal, this allowed me to see parts of the rugby.  Hurricanes v the Crusader. I am sorry to say the Crusaders gave away their winning streak. Then we were back in the Mercedes Hybrid back to Howick. Thank you David for the drive.

Tuesday night meeting was another good night at Rotary with a prospective member in Steve Lines coming along. Wendy Spiller from the Police was our guest, as it was the night of the Rotary Police Awards.
Thank you David Owen, you did a great job asking Wendy Spiller to tell the club what the Police have done over the last year in our area and over Covid-19 was a great idea. The Police Award this year has been given to the entire Ormiston Police Section because Wendy Spiller said that everyone has stood up to the plate so they all achieved. Well done to all of you until next year.

It was good to see Allen Riley back with us, Jim Duckworth after a trip to hospital also. It great to know that John Osbourne’s trip to hospital to have his back screws replaced was successful and he is on the recovery.

Thanks to all the members turning Tuesday night and to our visitor, Steve Lines. I hope all the members traveling around the North and South Island are enjoying yourselves.

See you all on the 11th August 2020 same place to catch up. Please invite family, friends, and neighbours to listen to Simeon Brown National MP for Pakuranga and Chris Luxon National candidate for Botany but please let David Owen or myself know numbers please.

 Meeting 11th August - Election 2020

The club will be hosting Simeon Brown and Chris Luxon at our meeting on August 11. This is an opportunity to hear about the National Party’s policies and plans for New Zealand’s recovery in a post Covid-19 environment, and at a local level what they believe are the priorities for the electorates of Pakuranga and Botany.

This is an excellent occasion to invite our partners, friends, neighbours, business associates and potential new members to what will be a very interesting meeting with two speakers who will give us their insights on very topical matters given the political context over the last few weeks and months.

Simeon has spoken to the club several times and is always informative, interesting, and knowledgeable. Chris is speaking to us for the first time and is campaigning to be elected as the MP for Botany, a seat currently held by Jami Lee-Ross. Many of our club members live in this electorate so it is a great opportunity to hear Chris speak and become acquainted with him as a person and understand his aspirations and objectives if he becomes your Member of Parliament.

It's important that we get a great turnout to what will be a great meeting that will help everyone who attends understand the political environment of not only our local area but the whole country.

Please also note that on 8 September the Labour Party candidates Naisi Chen (Botany) and Nerissa Henry (Pakuranga) will be giving us their thoughts on the same topics.
