Thank you to all those who attended our meeting on Tuesday night.
It is always a pleasure to welcome partners and guests. On Tuesday night along with Meryl Monk, Heather Savory, accompanied by her and John’s granddaughter, and Jackie Charkow, we also welcomed Jenny Li our newest member who will be formally inducted at out next Club Meeting and Carol Ainsley, a past member who will be rejoining our club.
Our next meeting will be a club assembly and will focus on updates from Directors, what is happening in our committees, and an outline of the purpose of the new Comms Committee from Ian Fox. An important information evening for ALL members please.
Our guest speaker Dr. Helen Murray was quite outstanding and her topic Sports Dementia and Repetitive Sports Concussions sparked a great deal of interest and questions at the end of her presentation. She is an amazing young woman who works at the Auckland University, and has had an interesting journey to reach her decision and focus for her research and study. This decision was strongly influenced by personal experience , as a national representative in Ice Hockey, playing at both National and International Level, captaining the NZ Ice Fernz, she has seen first hand the results and impact of repetitive sports concussions.
Helen talked us through her academic pathway, her time in the United States who enjoy a mouth watering budget for research , especially compared to Auckland University !We are fortunate indeed that she still choose to stay here in NZ.
It was interesting to hear how her work in this field has had an impact on Covid 19 particularly in New York , and her work has been published in highly reputable science magazines . Yet another remarkable achievement.
The recently launched Centre for Brain Research has a focus on Sports Brain Research, a hot topic right now both here in New Zealand and overseas, is community based research because here is significant evidence to show it is critical to have a broad based understanding of the community perspective including athletes, parents, coaches and clinicians.
Helen’s presentation was engaging ,informative and personalized creating a great deal of interest and comment from those present. An extremely talented and focused young woman.
Thanks to Sergeant Bill, who did a fine job on his first outing as sergeant and seems to have got the hang of the fines pretty quickly !!
Thanks too to all those who helped with the setting up before the meeting and putting away after the meeting.
Many hands do indeed make light work. Thank you.
Until our next meeting
