Last Tuesday was a good night. We started of by welcoming Vijay Saini back as a member of Howick Rotary and we are looking forward to getting to know Vijay and involving him in our activities. With the number of new members an evening listening to their life stories promises to be interesting.
Richard Waugh was an excellent speaker. While he focused on one of his passions “The history of aviation in New Zealand” the number and scope of his other activities ranging from working as a minister in our community, to a memorial to those killed in the Kaimai air crash 40 years ago, to the Brit Euro car show just to name a few, make my head spin. Where does he find the time and the energy?

Bookarama is busy with books coming in and being sorted on Tuesday and Thursday help is always appreciated 9:30-11:30 at the RSA basement. As a promotion for Bookarama Alison and Madeleine, Jeannette and I gave away 500 branded cotton bags and flyers at the Howick market. It turned out to be a lot of fun talking to the public about Bookarama and Rotary. Probably 40-50% know about Bookarama and intended to either donate books or attend or both. A number also were interested in what we do as Rotarians. Well worth while and we should think about how we can engage one on one like that in the future.
As you can see some of our intrepid travellers are doing their bit promoting Bookarama to the Canadians. Keep up the good work and photos Ian and Colin.
It was noticeable that any politicians present made a point of coming to talk to us and were complimentary about our contribution to our community. To reinforce that a number will be joining us for Charter Night including our local MP Simeon Brown and Rebecca. Simeon had to get leave from parliament to attend. Sharon Stewart and David will also be joining us and there may be others. To further reinforce how seriously our role is being taken I have just received an invitation to a meeting with the local board about “The question of sustainability and ensuring a future for service clubs in the community.” I will keep you posted on what happens.
Charter Night next week a celebration of our past and our future. Get into our theme “Mad Hatter” and have fun!
Don’t forget the following week there is NO TUESDAY meeting. We are attending a special presentation on Monday 24th on “Predator Free 2050” at Waipuna Lodge with predinner drinks from 5:30. To date we have 13 attending which is disappointing. Please consider joining us. It is very relevant to the joint clubs project to make Howick and Pakuranga pest free.
Spare a thought for John Osborne who is having more surgery on Monday, shoulder this time. Hopefully no more medical matters to report.
Enjoy your weekend.
