 President's Message

Madeleine East

I hope you are all safe and well and no one suffered any real damage. Cyclone Gabrielle was certainly another devastating event across our region and our country.

It was definitely an unusual meeting on Tuesday night! With the Cyclone creating real problems across Auckland, we were still experiencing very strong winds, but the decision of the board was to continue with the meeting, It was noted that 4 of them were apologies! All with good reasons. Thanks to those hardy souls who came along, I think 17 of us altogether who  enjoyed a very relaxed but enjoyable get together.

Our guest speaker was still in Wellington unable to get out with flights cancelled, and our tireless programme director, John Savory, had no luck finding a fill in, so came to the rescue by preparing a Trivia Quiz which I think went very well indeed. I base that assessment on the fact that my team of John Sanders, Malcolm Pascoe, Dave Wylie and moi won !!

We did have a visitor, Dennis Kavanagh from the Pakuranga Rotary Club came to seek some support from us in the form of sponsorship of a Golf Tournament they are organising as a major fundraiser. We wish them well in their efforts and it was good to see the cooperation between the two clubs.

Our stand in sergeant Steve Lines did an excellent job, ringing the changes and adapting the programme and time to fit the situation. Well done Steve, and I think Bill, who was in attendance , gave you a very good “crit”, I certainly did. Thanks Steve.

Two requests for your support

1.   Please don’t forget Ukraine Relief. You can still make a donation. Just let John Sanders know how much and he will put it on your club account. You have up until 28th February to make a donation. Rob tells me about half a dozen have donated so far.

2. A request from the RSA for us to support Poppy Day again this year. I think about 6 of us sold poppies last Poppy Day. I can assure you that all money collected goes directly into the Poppy Trust and is used only to support Veterans and their dependents. Poppy Day this year is on 22nd April and is for 2 hours. I have requested early morning again (8am – 10am) it may be a different time but I will let you know. If you are available to help, please send me an email or phone me so I can pass on our names to the organisers. I do need this information very quickly.

I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting 0n 28th February.

Nga Mihi Nui.
Kia Tupato, noho haumaru. Take care stay safe.
