 President's Message

Madeleine East

It was good to be back and welcome you all to our dinner meeting after being absent for the month of March.

Thank you Madeleine for filling in for me.

Clem DeSilva our exchange student was in attendance.Clem has only two months remaining before returning to France.

Sharon Stewart was our guest speaker for the night, Sharon who is well known to us all was introduced by David Teape.

Sharon has been a Councillor for over 30 years and is currently an Auckland Councillor for the Howick Ward. Sharon was awarded a QSM for services to Howick in 1998. Sharon is also the chair of Auckland Councils Civil Defence and Emergency Management Committee having assumed this role in 2013.

Sharons presentation was focused on the flooding within Auckland during the severe weather event on the 27th-29th January 2023. Sharon was not made aware of the flooding by her team and was made  aware of it by her daughter late on the evening of the 27th January. Sharon made reference to The Mike Bush report which is an independent review led by former Police Commissioner Mike Bush has found Auckland Councils Emergency management system was not prepared for an event like the 27th of January floods.
The review identified failures in the system for emergency responses that had been known about since 2016 but had not been addressed.

In a long list of recommendations, the report said the council needed to urgently finalise the current review of the Auckland Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group plan, with specific procedures around high priority hazard and events.

Go to:-WWW.newshub.co.nz/mike bush/flooding.  To view the full report.

Just a word of advice:- People need to take responsibility for their immediate surroundings during or especially before any predicted weather event.  Check that all drains and storm water grates etc are free from rubbish and leaves. Especially during the autumn season.

There were questions from the floor.  David Teape then thanked Sharon.  The club members expressed their  thanks in the usual manner.

Sharon donated the wine gift back to the club members.

Rotary Business then took place-
Sergeant Steve Lines once again kept us amused with his fines and jokes.

Congratulations to our raffle winners.   New World vouchers:- Rob Mouncey and David Fels.  Have a Go raffle:- John Savory and Jim Donovan.   Sharon s wine went to Madeleine East.

 Howick Schools Anzac Commemoration Exhibition

This is a new project for our club which involves local schools being requested to encourage students to create a static visual exhibition commemorating the ANZAC participation during armed conflicts over the last hundred years or so, highlighting local area involvement and the sacrifices that our service men and women have made.

There are 6x schools participating: Macleans College, Ormiston College, Sancta Maria College, Somerville Intermediate, Elim Christian College (years 7 and 8), and Mission Heights Junior College.

The venue is the Fencible Lounge next to the library in Uxbridge Rd, and the display will be open on Wednesday 24th 10am to 5pm and Thursday 25th 1pm to 5pm. The displays will be removed by the schools from 5pm to 7pm.

The opening hours are divided into 90 minutes shifts from 10am on Wednesday, and 1pm on Thursday, responsibilities are to record visitor numbers to enable a review of the project and encourage considerate observation of the displays etc. Poppies may be on sale however this is yet to be confirmed.

Please contact David Fels if you need any more information or can help with any of the duties on 021537236, or davidpatrickfels@gmail.com.

The organising committee thanks you for your consideration, it is much appreciated.

Rotary Easter Dine Out

A well attended and enjoyable time was had at the Easter Rotary Dine Out held at the Good Home Restaurant.

The ladies looked splendid in their Easter Bonnets. There was a very creative mix of bonnets with Helen Donoghue winning the competition with a hat celebrating the easter egg theme with a "nest" made from Bower feathers and Easter eggs hanging from her bonnet. David Teape awarded the prize of an appropriate chocolate Easter Bunny.

John Savory, not to be overlooked, wore a large, bright "Bishops Hat" and took on the name of Pope John for the night!

 Blankets 4 Kids 4 Winter

This project gets underway in May with the first advert promoting it appearing in the H&P Times on the 17th April.

This year with the diminishing spare blankets resulting from prior collections the community is also being requested to make monetary donations. The howick rotary web site will be set up using the Stripe payment system to facilitate payments. Members will be also be able to make donations through their club account.

Bin collections have been arranged and we will need volunteers to help sort the blankets in the last week of May at the Howick Information Centre. Please contact Rob Mouncey mob 021 413341 or email rob.mary@xtra.co.nz if you are able to help.
