 President's Message

Madeleine East

A good turnout again tonight, a few missing faces including Sergeant Bill Charkow who is currently sporting a very large bandage and sling on his left arm. My thanks to Colin Monk who stepped in as Sergeant and managed to fine a number of our members!! A job well done Colin.

It was a pleasure to welcome Meryl Monk as a guest for the evening. Always lovely to see you, Meryl.

One-minute speakers gave updates on club activities.

David Teape reminded us Dine Out is on Easter Sunday at The Good Home. Ladies don’t forget your Easter Bonnet.

Sally Fletcher outlined projects that need to be undertaken at HHV on our cottage. These include some painting, sanding, minor repairs and maintenance and gardening. Tuesdays and Fridays are good days for us to volunteer, please contact Sally if you are willing and able so work can begin. It is so good to have this project back on our radar again. I look forward to being part of the “team” and getting some of the work done.

Rob Mouncey updated us on Blankets for Kids. The publicity is well underway with a new logo which is very eye catching and reflects the style of the Fun Run Logo. A very practical start has been made by Meryl Monk, who was presented with large number of piggy squares to be made into blankets. She has completed the task and produced --- blankets to start the collection off. Huge thanks to Meryl.

Our guest speaker for this evening was Iva Ropati, Principal Howick College.

Iva has been seconded to the Education Council and has been part of a task force team researching current Leadership (Principals) in our schools. Iva used his own pathway to illustrate some of the issues facing todays principals and the lack of training and support available to them at all levels and stages of their Principalship. While the Education Council has come up with 9 capabilities for Principals which are very sound and reasonable there is no actual support for principals to meet these, no national pathway for a principal’s professional growth cycle to prepare them for the role.
Social issues are impacting on the role of principals and teaching and learning. Issues that frequently have to be solved through the principal’s own problem-solving skills. Because of the lack of support, workload and stress levels are high and the cause of 50% of principals looking for careers outside education.

Steve Lines, a retired teacher at both secondary and intermediate level, raised the issues of demands on teachers that detract from their role as teachers. The need for ongoing administration and documentation required by the current system has a huge impact on teachers and their ability to do their job as teachers. Children and their learning should be the focus.  A position that cannot be argued with.

A very interesting and somewhat sobering presentation that held our attention and attracted some good questions and considerable discussion at the end of our meeting.

Please click the link for Iva’s full presentation.

As we move to Orange and more freedoms, the Board will consider our position in terms of returning to the Howick Club at the  board meeting next week and keep you up to date. In the meantime, I hope you enjoyed the Easter Break, and did not over indulge, however a little bit of chocolate shouldn’t have done too much harm!!!

Kia Tupato, Kia noho haumaru. Take care and stay safe.

Guest Speaker - Iva Ropati

Iva Ropati Principal of Howick College shared his experience whilst on secondment to NZ Teachers Council to review Principal Leadership Growth and Development amongst NZ Principals.

His presentation was thought provoking and challenging. The main recommendations of the team on conclusion of the review were:

Priority 1: Address workload: • Increased and equitable staffing provision • Ensure nationally mandated change is appropriately resourced and managed, and • Implement recommendations from the Tomorrow’s Schools Report around property.

Priority 2: Develop a formal and coherent programme for principal professional development and support. This should: • Support career development and progression from aspiring to experienced principals and beyond • Incorporate appointment criteria and include additional support for appointees who do not reach this threshold, and 9 • Provide specific and targeted support to grow leadership capability and aspiration among Maori and Pacific teachers and leaders.

Priority 3: Ensure there is tailored support for all principals by: • Develop best practice guidelines around supporting principal wellbeing • Provide Board training in understanding the challenges of the principal’s role, the importance of principal PLD for the school and the individual, and the support the principal needs to maintain their wellbeing, and • Establish the leadership advisor roles as recommended by the Tomorrow’s Schools taskforce to provide principals with customised support and critical friendship they can trust.

All in all a very interesting evening.

Blankets 4 Kids 4 Winter

“Blankets 4 Kids 4 Winter” Appeal Starts in May.

Winter is on its way and the unfortunate truth is that many families in the community will not have enough blankets to keep their kids warm on winter nights.

To assist these families Howick Rotary will commence the collection of blankets and quilts through its “Blankets 4 Kids 4 Winter” Appeal on May 1st. It will run for the month of May. The project is being supported by the Howick Village Association which has added its organizational skills, resources and network to provide additional momentum. This follows the successful Rotary effort last year when more than 350 blankets were distributed to families in need through Stand Children Services and All Saints Anglican Church. In addition 40 Hand Woven blankets, along with many Teddy Bears, largely from the “Knitting In Public” groups of Howick and Botany, were donated to the Littlemore charity for the Middlemore Infant Birth Department.

Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church has been added to the supported charities this year to enable more families in need to be reached.

Collection Points will be the Howick Information Centre, Howick Village Optometrist and Grasslands in Moore Street. If you are group or a school that needs help with a pick up please call.

For more information contact Bill Charkow 021 663022 or Rob Mouncey 021 413341.

  Rotary Dine Out

Another very enjoyable evening was held at the Prospect of Howick last Sunday.

In the spirit of “Easter Parade” appropriate hats were warn reminiscent of the 1900’s and as immortalised in the film.

The photo says it all, and Pat Abercrombie was the winner of the best “Easter Bonnet” competition.

Carole Ainsley said of her first Dine Out experience “I was treated like royalty and I would definitely come again”

  Anzac Sound & Light Tribute

The Howick Village Association has organized an Anzac Sound & Light Tribute video being played onto the Picton Centre Wall. It will run from the 20th to the 25th April to commemorate the soldiers who died defending our freedom.
