The Rotary Club of Howick is celebrating a wildly successful Bookarama 2026, which smashed previous attendance and sales records during its four-day run from 8th to 11th October at the Howick College Gymnasium. The extraordinary turnout ensures the Club can fully sustain and expand its vital support programmes for local schools and community initiatives over the coming year.
Despite the event being intentionally shortened by one day compared to last year, community backing was stronger than ever. Foot traffic surged by over 30%, drawing an estimated 3,000 book lovers through the doors. This massive turnout translated directly into financial success, with total sales climbing over 20% higher than the previous year's benchmark which was a record at that time.
"The generosity of our community, donors, and partners this year has been absolutely outstanding" said a spokesperson for the Rotary Club of Howick. "Because Bookarama is our primary fundraising vehicle, this record-breaking result means we can confidently continue our deep commitment to local school programmes and provide essential assistance where our community needs it most."
The 2026 event was bolstered by two highly successful new initiatives:
• The "Premium Book Zone": Made possible by several New Zealand book publishers donating surplus stock, allowing attendees to buy brand-new books at a fraction of their retail price alongside high-value, rare second-hand editions.
• Silent Auctions: A popular new feature giving collectors the chance to bid on unique books featuring official author signatures.
The Rotary Club of Howick extends its heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of individuals who donated books, the New Zealand publishing houses, Howick College for providing the venue for a second year, and every member of the public who attended and purchased. Planning is already quietly underway to ensure next year's event continues to build on this year's incredible momentum.
