 President's Message

Tuesday 10th July

After the celebrations involved in our presidential changeover this week it was time to get down to business. Most of the ways our club makes a difference is through the work of our committees and the projects that they manage on behalf of Howick Rotary so it was fitting that my first club meeting as president was committee meetings. To me that means getting on with making a difference. I have asked our directors to use Keyway to keep members and our friends informed about what is going on with regular updates.

Next Tuesday we have one of our special occasions when we acknowledge and encourage apprentices in their career choice through our annual “Apprentice Awards” in conjunction with BCITO and MIT who submit their best apprentices. This is an opportunity to bring partners and to show family, friends and prospective members Howick Rotary in action. Please invite them and make sure that you advise David Owen who you will be bringing before 10am Tuesday so that we can feed them!

The following week our guest speaker is past District Governor Jennie Herring. There is a lot of change going on in Rotary. Many clubs are trying different approaches to meetings and activities to make Rotary more attractive to different generations and people in circumstances to those we experienced during our careers and lives. Please join us and think about what might apply to our club.

It has been an enthralling week watching events unfold in Thailand. What a response to a seemingly impossible situation from the international community. An amazing success tinged with sadness over the loss of life of one of the brave divers.

If you had told me before the World Cup began who the semi finalists would be, even with my limited knowledge, I would have laughed at you. Now we have a “David and Goliath” final.

My thought for the week –

“It is in giving that we receive.”

Who will you talk to about Rotary this week?

It is clearly evident our membership has been shrinking faster than it has grown over recent years.
